What is Two-way SMS?
Also known as: Conversational SMS
Two-way SMS is text messaging where the recipient can reply and the reply arrives back in the sender's platform, turning a broadcast into a conversation.
Two-way sending needs a number that belongs to you — a dedicated number or a short code — because replies to an alphanumeric sender ID have nowhere to go.
Replies can be handled by a person in a shared inbox, answered automatically by keyword rules, or pushed to another system via an inbound webhook. Most teams use a mix: rules for the predictable replies, people for the rest.
