What is SMS segment?
Also known as: Message part
An SMS segment is one billable part of a text message. Messages longer than a single segment are split, sent as separate parts, and reassembled on the handset — but each part is charged.
Segment length depends on encoding: 160 characters for GSM-7, 70 for Unicode. Once a message spans more than one part, a few characters of each part are used for reassembly headers, dropping the limits to 153 and 67 respectively.
Counting segments before you send is the cheapest optimisation in SMS. Trimming a 165-character message to 160 halves its cost across an entire campaign.
