What is Alphanumeric sender ID?

Also known as: Sender ID, Business name sender

An alphanumeric sender ID is a text name — up to 11 characters — that appears in place of a phone number when a business sends an SMS, so the message shows as coming from a brand rather than a number.

Sender IDs make messages instantly recognisable, which lifts open and click rates on marketing sends. The trade-off is that recipients cannot reply to a sender ID: replies need a dedicated number.

In Australia, sender IDs must be registered against the business that uses them. Registration protects brands from impersonation and is a condition of the ACMA's SMS Sender ID Register.
