What is ACMA?
Also known as: Australian Communications and Media Authority
The ACMA is Australia's communications regulator. It enforces the Spam Act 2003, administers the SMS Sender ID Register, and sets the industry codes that carriers and messaging providers operate under.
For businesses sending SMS, the ACMA matters in three ways: it polices consent and unsubscribe obligations, it runs the register that protects brand sender IDs from impersonation, and it publishes the anti-scam rules carriers apply to messaging traffic.
Complaints about SMS marketing are made to the ACMA, and providers are expected to act on them. Telecommunications complaints that cannot be resolved with a provider go to the TIO.
