What is SMS 2FA?
Also known as: SMS OTP, Two-factor authentication by SMS
SMS 2FA is two-factor authentication delivered by text message: after entering a password, the user receives a one-time code by SMS and enters it to complete sign-in.
SMS codes are the most widely supported second factor because they need no app and no setup. Many business systems still offer SMS as the only option, and bind it to a single mobile number.
That single-number limit is a practical problem for teams: whoever holds the phone becomes a bottleneck when they are on leave, in a meeting or off shift. Delivering the code to a shared business number that several people can see resolves it without sharing a handset.
