What is DLR?
Also known as: Delivery Level Report
DLR is the industry abbreviation for a delivery receipt — the carrier's status callback telling the sender whether an SMS was delivered, failed or is still in flight.
DLRs arrive asynchronously, so applications should treat the initial API response as an acknowledgement and update message state when the DLR lands. Matching is done on the message ID returned at send time.
Good DLR handling makes list hygiene automatic: repeated hard failures for a number are a signal to stop sending to it.
