What is SMS API?
An SMS API is an HTTP interface that lets software send and receive text messages programmatically, usually with a single authenticated POST request carrying the recipient, the sender and the message body.
A modern SMS API is a REST endpoint that accepts JSON, authenticates with an API key, and returns a message ID for tracking. Delivery outcomes come back later as webhooks rather than in the original response.
Because the interface is plain HTTP, an SMS API works from any language, any framework, and from no-code tools like Zapier, Make and n8n without an SDK.
